Kha’s ongoing collective painting series, SUPPRESSION AND RELEASE, captures the ebb and flow of nuanced influences drawn from eastern and western landscapes which are emulsified into poured drippings and abstracted gestures of paint. Her works are a cathartic release, allowing the tension and colours of poured acrylic paint to narrate its own interpretation of an emotional landscape.
Kha’s work is informed by her return to her Cambodian and Chinese heritage. Her great-grandfather was an artist who migrated to Cambodia from China, whose work was lost and destroyed during the Khmer genocide. In traditional Chinese ink painting, 山水, “shan-shui”, landscapes of mountains, waterfalls and rivers represented the artist’s inner world. Kha combines her academic knowledge with a Khmer, untranslatable word that represents a person’s heart and spirit. The core of the SUPPRESSION AND RELEASE series: a unique Khmer word, ទឹកចិត្ត, “tuk-chet”.
